It’s hard to willingly subject oneself to the cringe that is triggered from listening to recordings of one’s younger self singing cathartically into a microphone and haphazardly assaulting the strings of their first electric guitar. Even so, that is exactly what EMC does. Here she shares her experience and thoughts that emerge while listening to a version of a song she had originally recorded in 1995.

There are so many songs that EMC has been drunk-on— but there is something about the kismet of time and place that makes a song become a part of one’s dna. Recording this James Blake’s song was a retreat and therapy for EMC during a rough period of transition in her life in the summer of 2021.
